5 Quintessential Records With Crooked Colours

You can actually hear the blood, sweat and tears that went into Crooked Colours‘ debut album ‘Vera’.

Every hook, every melody, every chorus, every tiny little detail – all 10 songs conjure images of the Perth trio fine-tuning every minute detail, hunched over instruments, desks and laptops at home and in dimly-lit studios at ungodly hours. It’s certainly no surprise that the writing and recording of the LP has been described as an incredibly “patient” process from an act “determined to craft a timeless debut” – ‘Vera’ is an undeniable masterclass in production and structure that’s way too easy to revisit time and time again.

With a number one iTunes Dance Chart debut, support slots for Crystal Castles, RÜFÜS and San Cisco, and sets at key festivals like Groovin The Moo, Parklife, Wonderland, Southbound, Hot Dub Wine Machine and Yours and Owls all under their belt already, it seems that more and more local and international music lovers are waking up to the magic of ‘Vera’ and Crooked Colours’ inventive brand of electronic pop.

After hearing the rich alt-J-esque slow builds in tracks like “Flow” and the foreboding shades of The Acid that show up in album closer “Perfect Run”, it made perfect sense to ask keyboardist Leon De Baughn to select five records that have shaped the band into who they are today.

“Great production on this record; it really shows the power of the ‘less is more’ approach, and Ry X‘s vocals and lyrics are amazing. “Ghost” is a stand out.”

“We have this on repeat every time we are on tour. It’s amazing front to back – each track is different, but they all still have elements that tie the whole album together.”

“This record was a huge inspiration for our last record. Tracks like “Taro” and “Something Good” take you on a musical journey with a genre-bending sound.”

“We moved in together a few years ago and this record was on HEAVY rotation. It can chill you out or get you ready for a party. The opening track “Many Rivers” is trés bien!”

“This is one of those albums we always go back to for inspiration. The drums on “Our Love” and “Silver” are minimal but complex at the same time.”
