Back in May, a joint EP from the legendary Kaytranada in the producer’s chair and an emerging rapper by the name of Buddy caught my attention and quickly weaseled its way into my life (and all of my Spotify playlists). Brimming with that inventive off-kilter Kaytra energy and imbued with a range of insightful verses and incredible moments on Buddy’s part, every single track on ‘Ocean & Montana’ was a killer moment and a potential single in its own right. It was a first impression I still haven’t forgotten, and the record set an exciting precedent for Buddy’s future role in the hip hop landscape.
Just a few months later, Buddy is now back to flex his obvious talent with a brand new single and news of a follow-up EP. Opting once again to work with a single producer across the whole project, the Compton rapper has teamed up with MIKE & KEYS for ‘Magnolia’, a fresh set that digs deep into his foundations in gospel and the music of the church.
Although ‘Magnolia’ is due to drop later in the year, Buddy has already unveiled the first single from the EP. Premiered via Zane Lowe, “That Much” sees the young emcee adopt a more biting Kendrick-esque delivery and more refined flow over a punchy rolling beat and a range of jarring synth hooks. Buddy is yet to set a foot wrong, and “That Much” is a promising indicator of what we can expect to hear on ‘Magnolia’ in a few months time.
