Halcyon Drive On The Road: An Essential Tour Playlist

With Perth producer guru Joel Quartermain (Meg Mac, Dustin Tebbutt, ELKI) in their corner, all-new ways of writing and recording up their sleeves, and genius multi-instrumentalist Basil Yu on board for their new-and-improved live shows, Halcyon Drive are already locked and loaded for local domination over the coming months.

Previous singles like “Books For The Holidays” and “Reset” have left a lasting impression on us in the past – conjuring comparisons to indie rock buzz magnets like Everything Everything and Jagwar Ma with their rich melodies and innovative instrumentation – but their latest single “The Birds” is their most compelling effort yet. Rolling in on a haunting first verse and a sci-fi synth loop, the track eventually explodes into a soaring falsetto chorus and a massive Foals-flavoured arrangement that shows off both their deep musicality and knack for a damn good melody. Just when we thought they couldn’t up the ante any more…

With their full East Coast tour kicking off next Thursday in Sydney, we asked the Halcyon Drive lads to pull together a cheeky little playlist of the tracks they’ll be pumping on the road.

1. The War On Drugs – “Under The Pressure”

“This song personifies the long drive for me. A modern classic made for cruising the highway. This record soaks up a nice amount of time too.” – Mick (lead vocals/guitar)

2. Arcade Fire – “No Cars Go”

“On the last tour, we had this album cranking on the drive from Sydney to Melbourne. So one of the first things that popped into my head when thinking ‘long drives’! Great driving tune too.” – Mick

3. Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains – “La vérité”

“This whole album is a go-to summer favourite for me. Windows down, cranking stereo, good times!” – Mick

4. Slow Dancer – “It Goes On”

Slick, cruisy and vibey. Perfect to gaze outside the window to when you’re the passenger. The name of the track is oh-so apt as well.” – Max (drums)

5. Phoenix – “Lisztomania”

“The soundtrack to a good time, and the spark for a positive attitude. I do recall this blasting during our journey to our first Wollongong show and seeing the coastline appear before us.” – Max

6. Little Dragon – “High”

“This song is all about warmth and soul; it’s a reminder to take a deep breath and prepare for what awaits you at the end of your journey. The perfect reflection tune. Moooooood.” – Max

7. Queens Of The Stone Age – “You Think I Ain’t Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire”

“As well as being one of the most head-banging, steering-wheel-punching songs ever to come out of QOTSA, this song literally starts with car sound effects. Appropriate for the beginning of any road trip.” – Basil (bass/synth/vocals)

8. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Berlin”

Another punchy rock banger. Impossible to not sing along to, regardless of your seat in the car.” – Basil

9. Half Moon Run – “Turn Your Love”

I heard this song for the first time whilst driving around for a couple of regional Victoria shows as the merch guy. Very high in vibe. Never sold as many t-shirts as I did right after hearing this song.” – Basil

10. Everything Everything – “Can’t Do”

“I mean…we haven’t toured since this song came out, but I’m calling it right now: this song will be played and this song will be played a lot when we tour through October. It’s a promise from me to you.” – Basil
