Five whole years – that’s how long the world has waited for a new album from Miss Jorja Smith. In 2018, she released her ‘Be Right Back’ EP, which featured her smooth single “Addicted”, to tie us over, telling Apple Music’s Zane Lowe at the time that she wasn’t just ready for a new album just yet. ‘Be Right Back’ was a gift for her fans in the meantime. In the same interview with Lowe, she said, “I want to tour my album when I can tour my album. And also I just know that there’s just another level that I feel I can get to musically in all aspects. Creatively as well, vision, everything.”
Given how incredible ‘Lost & Found’ was, Smith can be forgiven for taking her time with her sophomore release. It’ll be damn hard to top her debut record, but “Try Me”, the first taste of the Grammy Award-nominee’s new project, is proof that it will be well worth the wait. Smith’s vocals are more formidable than ever, as she croons over hollowed percussion and a tip-toeing bassline. Filmed in Marseille, the visuals see Smith take on the role of a matador in an arena, coming up against a dancer (Andrea Bou Othmane) who, she explains in a press release, “embodies a bull that represents the world and its opinions out of my control.”
